Proven trio for the " Dreiklang"

Marti AG relies on MEVA formwork and the alkus® solid plastic panel for the new replacement building at Aarau Cantonal Hospital

Marti AG Zurich used MEVA formwork covered with the alkus® solid plastic panel for the formwork work on the new replacement building for Aarau Cantonal Hospital in the Swiss canton of Aargau. The aluminium-reinforced alkus® AL20 was used in the "Dreiklang" project for the construction of the walls, the basement floors and the exposed concrete in various areas of the building. Any resulting holes and scratches in the formwork covering could be repaired quickly and easily on site thanks to the special repair process from alkus AG.

Since 2020, a new hospital has been under construction on the grounds of Aarau Cantonal Hospital while it continues to operate. The building, called "Dreiklang", comprises two staggered basement floors, ten upper floors - including four plinth floors and six bed floors - and an additional technical floor at the top. The special name alludes to the harmonious unity of the three main areas: Outpatient clinics, functional areas and wards. Once the new hospital has been completed and opened in 2026, the existing buildings will be demolished.

Durable formwork facing in action

Marti AG used MEVA Mammut 350 wall formwork to build the walls, which are up to 5.30 meters high. Like all MEVA formwork, this is clad with the alkus® solid plastic panel as standard. The 20-millimetre-thick alkus® AL20 panel was used in the formwork elements (350/250) measuring up to 8.75 square meters. Most of the material was sourced from Marti AG's own stock. Rental material from MEVA Switzerland was used. "Marti AG has been a satisfied MEVA customer for many years and was therefore already familiar with the use and benefits of the alkus® formwork panel," explains Michael Tschenett, Managing Director of alkus AG. "It is waterproof and UV-resistant, making it particularly durable. Up to 1,500 uses and more are possible with one panel. This saves you having to constantly change the formwork facing and at the same time allows you to work more economically and sustainably.

Exposed concrete quality in stairwells, the boulevard and other areas

The alkus® AL20 formwork panel was also used for the basement floors of the "Dreiklang" project: in the Mammut 350 wall formwork, which was partially executed on one side. A third area of application for the Mammut 350 covered with the alkus® AL20 solid plastic panel was the exposed concrete in the stairwells, the boulevard and other areas of the building. The solid plastic formwork panel was a good choice for the required concrete quality: "The alkus® panel enables consistently high-quality concrete surfaces over its long-life cycle," explains Michael Tschenett. "It can be cleaned quickly and easily after use and can be repaired without any loss of quality in the event of holes, scratches or breakthroughs. We recently came second in the 'Product of the Year 2024' competition with this special repair process." As part of the "Dreiklang" project, Marti AG and MEVA Switzerland carried out the repair and cleaning of the formwork facing directly on the construction site without any complications.

"Proud of the use of the alkus® formwork panel"

The shell of the new replacement building was completed in less than two years. One wing of the new hospital is already in operation. "We are proud of the many interesting concrete projects with very different requirements for which the alkus® formwork panel is used time and again," says Managing Director Michael Tschenett. “It shows how flexible the panel is and that its use is always well worth it.”
